England 7s star Rob Vickerman visits Hymers College

10 Mar 2012

Rob Vickerman took time out from his preparations with the England sevens squad to pay a visit to his old school, Hymers College in Hull, to wish the school sevens squad good luck in their forthcoming trip to participate in the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School Sevens.

Rob, currently in training with England before the Hong Kong Sevens, is a third generation Hymers College former pupil. He welcomed the opportunity to visit his old school again and coach some of the students, saying:

“Being an old boy of the school it was great coming back to meet the squad who are going to be playing at Rosslyn Park and to wish them luck. I was pleased to find out that the team reached the final of the North of England Schools Invitation Sevens so should be in good shape to do well at the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School Sevens. Rosslyn Park is the world’s biggest schools sevens tournament, so to win that as well would be amazing for the school and a real feather in the cap of the children playing.”

He talked the children through the tactics and skills required to play international rugby sevens before heading out onto the pitches to demonstrate the drills required to build a successful sevens team:

“I gave the kids a few tips about how England play sevens, I hope it was useful and I didn’t undo all the good work their usual coaches have done all season! Let’s hope both England and Hymers come away victorious from their next respective sevens tournaments!”

Mr Nick Gandy, Head of Sport at Hymers College, added: “Having Rob here today was a real privilege for us all at the school. Knowing a former pupil of the school is now playing professional international rugby will be a real motivator for the children and it is a huge honour for the school. We wish him and the England sevens team good luck in Hong Kong and Japan.”

We’re looking forward to seeing Hymers College and all the other schools in action when the tournament gets started in 16 days on the 26th March. Join us on Twitter and Facebook to get involved with the biggest schools rugby tournament in the world.
