The Matt Hampson Foundation provides physical and emotional support for young people following life-changing injury at all levels of sporting activity.
Matt was paralysed from the neck down and breathing via a ventilator after injury as an England Under-21 rugby player in 2005, but rather than lament what he had lost, he decided to focus on what he could still do and to ‘get busy living’.
The charity which carries his name is based at the Get Busy Living Centre near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, offering specialist physiotherapy, personal training, wellbeing, counselling and mentorship for beneficiaries and their families to help build confidence and adjust to a new life or return to work, education or sport.
The Centre now has more than 60 visitors per week and there are plans in 2026 to extend facilities to help even more beneficiaries in the safe and supportive community Matt has created while also developing a network of regional hubs to take support further.
Matt is also taking on his greatest-ever challenge this year by participating in the London Marathon with a team of four support runners to raise awareness and funds to continue to change young lives.
Matt Hampson OBE said: “We are very proud of the Foundation’s selection as a partner of the Rosslyn Park National School Sevens. I’m sure it will be an amazing week for all the players, coaches and supporters involved.
The world of rugby provided incredible support for me and my family after my accident in 2005 and seeing people come together to help one of their own like that was also an inspiration behind creating the Foundation to help young people after life-changing injury in sport.
The Foundation continues to grow and has beneficiaries from all different sports, but the values of team, family and community that we share with rugby remain at the core of everything we do.”
