The Ruth Strauss Foundation supports families where a parent is facing any incurable cancer diagnosis and advocates for more research and awareness into non-smoking lung cancer. By providing specialist, accessible support, they help parents feel confident and equipped to keep their children informed and involved, building understanding, connection, and resilience together for the future.
In early 2018, Ruth Strauss, a mum of two young boys, was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer that affects non-smokers. The Foundation arose from Ruth’s wish to help others in similar circumstances and has since built a network of care - offering direct support to families through its Family Support Service, training healthcare and education professionals to support affected parents and children, and funds vital research into non-smoking lung cancer to improve earlier diagnosis, treatment and care.
The Foundation also provides training programmes equipping schools and education staff with the skills and confidence to support students through anticipatory grief and bereavement.
The Ruth Strauss Foundation mission is to:
- Provide specialist, accessible support for families where a parent has incurable cancer, so parents feel confident and equipped to keep their children informed and involved, building understanding, connection and resilience together.
- Improve earlier diagnosis and outcomes for people with non-smoking lung cancer by raising awareness, investing in research, and collaborating with patient-led organisations, industry and healthcare professionals.
Since launching, we’ve supported thousands of families directly or through our resources, built a network of care by training professionals across healthcare, education and workplace settings, and funding vital research and awareness of non-smoking lung cancer.
