Day 3 – Colts tournament roundup

28 Mar 2012

The quarter-final stage of the Colts Tournament in the Rosslyn Park HSBC National Schools Sevens has taken shape after 160 sides were whittled down to just eight today.

Last year’s champions Tonbridge were knocked out in the final 32, which means that the 2012 Cup will have a new name on the trophy. The Perse School prevailed against Tonbridge, but then fell in the last 16 to RGS High Wycombe who progressed to the quarter-finals. They will face Millfield in the final eight, who dispatched Yarm School in the last 32 48-5 and then Ellesmere College 15-12.

The winner of that tie will play either Bedford Modern School or Woodhouse Grove School. Bedford Modern overcame Whitchurch High School and then Barnard Castle School to book their place in the final eight. Their opponents, Woodhouse Grove, beat Llandovery College and then John Fisher to take their spot in the quarters.

And in the other side of the draw, Dulwich College will face Sherborne in the final eight after prevailing against Pangbourne College 26-17 and then Epsom College in a thriller 19-17. Sherborne booked their place after narrow victories against Ysgol Gyfun Maes-yr-Yafa and then KCS Wimbledon.

The draw for the quarter-finals is complete with Truro School vying for a space in the final four against St Joseph’s College Ipswich. Truro came through a last 16 clash with QEH and then overcame Brighton College in the final eight to book their place. And their opponents – St Joseph’s College – eased past Portsmouth Grammar School and then beat Sedbergh to take their spot.

The quarter-finals are to be played on Thursday with the final taking place at 5pm.
