Moulton College took their first ever girls tournament title at the Rosslyn Park HSBC National Schools Sevens with a conclusive 29-0 win over Sir Gar on Friday.
Moulton stormed into an early 5-0 lead as an early injury to a Sir Gar player took the wind out of their sails. Moulton added to their tally before half-time to enter the break 12-0 up. In the second-half – try as they might – Sir Gar failed to get back into the game and Moulton piled on more points to eventually take it 29-0.
Moulton’s head coach Ian Renard was full of praise for the girls saying: “That’s been two years in the making. We lost last year to Hartpury in the final – a team we’ve never beaten – but we did enough to get past them today in the semi-finals.
“It’s been a fantastic achievement by the girls – every single one of them has put the effort in and I’m very proud of them.”
Rugby Football Union Junior Vice-President Bob Reeves was on hand to give the winning side their trophy and he was impressed with the high standard of Sevens on show.
“The girls’ standard is amazing,” Reeves said. “It’s got so much better over the past few years. These are the girls who end up in the national squads so these sorts of events are good for showcasing talent.
“Through getting the game portrayed well in the colleges and schools – more girls are playing the sport and the standard has just got so much better in recent times.”
