Wellington claim Cup title on epic final day

25 Mar 2022

RPNS7 2022 Day 5 Cup Winners - Wellington

Day 5 of the Tournament saw the concluding stages of the Cup (U18) and U14 Boys competitions,  as well as the Girls (U18), Girls AASE (U18) and Prep Schools competitions.

Wellington defeat Millfield to lift Cup

Another outstanding day of rugby brought the long-awaited 2022 tournament to a fitting close on Friday. Wellington College took the coveted Cup title with an outstanding performance, overcoming a very strong Millfield 35-19 in the final.

Wellington had overcome Ipswich 33-19 in the semi final while Millfield recorded an impressive 34-7 win over Barnard Castle. The scene was set for an epic final and crowds lined the showcase pitch for this, the closing game of the tournament.  Millfield were first to score and soon consolidated their lead with a further try to make the score 12-0. Wellington, however, kept their composure and got the try they needed from their first period of prolonged possession. Wellington then took the lead on the stroke of half time with a fantastic individual piece of skill – a deft kick in behind the defence for a try to make it 14-12.

Millfield lost a player to a yellow card from the half-time kick off and Wellington took advantage with a well-worked try. Again, Millfield responded but were unable to cross the line and Wellington had soon regained possession, running the length of the pitch to take a 28-12 lead. A further Wellington try sealed the victory despite a late consolation for Millfield.

Plate Competition

Brighton College suffered a defeat to Rugby School in today’s group stage, but after overcoming Hartpury College in the semis, they again met Rugby for a rematch in the final. Rugby had defeated Myerscough College 24-12 to reach the final, but Brighton College were too stong this time, taking the Plate with a 33-5 victory.

Sedbergh claim U14 Title

Another competition and another incredible final!  George Watson’s College reached the final with a huge scoreline against Brighton College while Sedbergh battled to the tightest of victories, overcoming Warwick 14-12.

And another huge battle was to come as the two sides fought an incredibly closely-contested final. George Watson’s were first to score but Sedbergh quickly replied. A brilliant individual try restored George Watson’s lead but Sedbergh were again able to level by half time. The second half continued in the same vein with Sedbergh eventually emerging as the victors by a single point with a last-gasp try – 22-21 the final score. Commiserations to George Watson’s who came so close.

It’s hard to believe these boys are U14; the standard was so high. We thoroughly recommend watching this epic final in full below.

Prep Schools (U13)

Prep Schools were also in action in the sunshine on the final day. Sixty teams played in a festival format as per RFU regulations so there were no titles awarded, but the rugby was outstanding and it was wonderful to see these talented players enjoying Sevens in the sunshine.
